Upfield rail line announcement

Last month, the Victorian Government announced funding of $80 million to progress the duplication of the Upfield line between Gowrie and Upfield.

Duplicating the Upfield line has been a key NCA advocacy priority over recent years, so this announcement is very welcome. It represents an important step towards addressing long-standing capacity constraints on the line.

Importantly, support for Upfield corridor improvements has been demonstrated across the political spectrum. The NCA acknowledges a commitment made by the Victorian Greens to support investment on the Upfield line. This recognition reinforces the strategic importance of the project and the need for action beyond a single election cycle.

The proposed duplication will address the single-track section between Gowrie and Upfield stations, which currently restricts the number of trains that can operate and limits the frequency and reliability of services.

The Upfield line is an important transport link for communities across Melbourne’s north. Improving the line is critical to providing more frequent and reliable public transport, as the outer region continues to grow and inner suburbs deal with increased congestion.

For the NCA, the focus now is on ensuring this commitment progresses from planning to delivery of the complete Upfield to Wallan rail connection, including duplication, network extension, electrification and new stations at Cloverton and Beveridge.
