Urgent need for Upfield rail improvements

The Upfield rail line services the growing populations of Merri-bek and southern Hume, ending at Upfield Station. Yet beyond that station are Melbourne’s booming northern suburbs, which stretch across Hume, Whittlesea and Mitchell.

There are currently no plans in place for improving transport in these areas.

After conducting comprehensive research through our Northern Region Transport Study, we know what needs to be done.

This involves:

  • upgrading dated train stations to improve amenities and access for our community

  • duplicating the rail line between Gowrie and Upfield stations because the current single track service creates significant bottlenecks

  • planning for the Upfield line to be extended to the Craigieburn line to provide more options for commuters travelling to Wallan

  • electrifying the service from Craigieburn to Wallan to reduce travel times and increase passenger capacity.

Our advocacy for duplication and extension of the Upfield rail line is summarised in a new video produced by the NCA to support this important campaign.
